This watch is a classic. Looks slick on the wrist, good basic functionality with no frills, comfortable enough to wear as a daily watch. I say comfortable “enough” because I find the strap to be slightly uncomfortable on my own wrist (I’d give the strap a comfort rating of 7.5 or 8/10). However, keep in mind that the watch is new, and because I just started wearing it, I want to give the band some time to mold a bit to the shape of my wrist. That might improve my comfort rating (and if it does I’ll give this watch 5 stars as well). Other than this minor issue with the strap, this watch is great.
I don’t wear bulky watches and what I really like about this G-Shock is its conservative size: it fits great on my smaller wrist. Not too big, not too small. I can wear this watch with confidence with anything, like t-shirt and jeans or with a suit and tie.
Some highlights:
– Classic timeless design that I really love.
– Time, day, day of the week are all displayed on the main screen.
– Current time is displayed in both the stopwatch and countdown timer mode. (Great to be able to see the actual time while I’m jogging.)
– Has one alarm that will ring for 20 seconds. The volume is not very loud but no weak either. (Loud enough for me.)
– The top left “Adjust” button is recessed. Many people (especially those with larger hands and fingers) report having a hard time pressing this button. (Not a problem for me.)
– Bright light.
– Keeps accurate time.
– Solid build quality.
If you’re looking for a great looking basic digital watch, this is a great choice. If you’re looking for a watch that gives you more functions, get a different watch. I needed a simple but solid watch that delivers accurate timekeeping. I also needed a stopwatch feature to time my jogging routines. That’s why I chose this model. Glad I did!

UPDATE: November 20, 2014 – I’m still enjoying the watch. But keeping it at 4 stars due to my continued discomfort with the wrist band. The strap is noticeably uncomfortable on my wrist…even a bit more so than when I first got the watch. I’m downgrading my rating of the wrist strap to 5/10. I plan to get a more comfortable strap for this watch (one that makes my wrist feel like I’m not wearing a watch).

Been reading online for the past two weeks trying to figure out which watch to buy. I became interested with the Invicta submariner homage, then moved my way over to Orient Mako, then to Seiko SKX173, and finally I was going to be happy with a Seiko Monster. However, by chance I saw a digital watch in one of the recommended listings on Amazon. I started thinking about the purpose of owning a watch and my conclusion was simple – to tell time…accurately. Automatic watches are great for people who appreciate the engineering involved in creating such timepieces. The only qualm I have with these watches is they are not precise…and they are delicate…and they need maintenance. Thus my search for the ultimate watch began. This week long journey ultimately brought me back to the first watch manufacturer I’ve ever owned – Casio. Growing up, my Casio would be on my wrist through many adventures, be it climbing a tree…then falling down shortly after, or swimming in the Pacific Ocean, or in a math test in class…I got an A by the way =) I started looking for a simple yet rugged Casio…and guess what? I finally found it~!
The Casio DW5600E-1V is an amazing watch. When I got this bad boy out of the box, I was amazed by how much better it looks in person vs pictures online. Trust me everyone, the pictures simply don’t do justice. I began setting the time and noticed the adjust button was recessed. This worried me because I thought I got a defective watch. But alas, after some research I found out this was the design Casio had intended. I strapped this new watch on and was blown away…again~! I love the fact that it’s not overly bulky and does not dig into my wrist. The digits are big enough so that one can tell time in a glance. A plus about this particular model is that the day, date, and time are displayed on the same screen. The illumination is perfect. It was bright enough that I used it as my light source earlier this evening to help my wife differentiate the right key to open the door. I appreciate the fact that the countdown timer in this model allows one to adjust the second, minute, and hour. The other models…for some strange reason only has a 60 minute CTD…yet they have a stopwatch that can count till all the digits become 9. What gives? I do not plan on using the alarm on this watch very often, but in the moments that I do, I like how it’s not overly complicated i.e. 5 different alarms. This watch is durable yet light and has a big screen to tell time yet does not dominate my 6.75 inch wrist. I’ve only had my DW5600 for two days but I know it will serve as my accurate and durable timepiece for many new adventures to come.

It is not very big or heavy, nor is it as attractive as other G-Shocks and at first glance it can be confused with a $17 Casio (perhaps that is why they have lowered its price). However, when we look at it in detail, we find a resistant watch that can withstand falls and immersion and can last several years. If you like a simple and durable watch, this is the option.

In spite of the title keep in mind the watch is good and worth the money. It’s comfortable even if you tighten it down a smidge more than you ought to. It doesn’t slip or slide, handles limited water exposure without issue in my experience, hand washing and being caught in the rain mostly, still haven’t tried swimming with it.
The display is good, readable, the instructions are clear and plenty easy to follow. Definetly quicker to check the time with a glance at the wrist than to drag out your phone.
In and out of freezers hasn’t done any overtly obvious damage to it.
