So you’re looking at watches and reading reviews as I had done before I decided to get this one. Now that I have it, I have to say I agree with all the good things that have been said. As for the negative display, it simply goes with the military style of this watch. It is not difficult to read under reasonably good lighting conditions. Not as easy as a positive display, but certainly not a deal breaker. I opted for the style. When it’s too dark to read it, there’s the big light button right up front and center or, you can set it to come on automatically. After all, even a positive display can’t be read in very low light conditions either.
By the time I received this watch, I had downloaded the manual and watched the YouTube reviews and instructional videos. I had also looked up the coordinates of my home location on Google maps. This made the initial setup easy.
I retired my old solar atomic G-Shock after 10 years of faithful service for this one with even more features, a few of which I probably won’t use much but then I won’t ever need them and not have them.
I think Casio hit it out of the engineering park with the Rangeman. The watch is flawless. This particular watch gains one second per month making the atomic sync feature almost unnecessary. I’ll use it less often than I did with my old atomic. This is one accurate, cool looking, super durable, feature packed watch that will most likely serve faithfully for another ten years or more.

I agonized over which model G-Shock to get. I was replacing a Citizen Promaster Dive watch that I love, but that chews up batteries. Long story short, I decided that is going on ebay, and I am getting a G-Shock.
I had one G-Shock solar back in 2010-12 that I had a lot of problems with (holding charge) but I think I did something to cause that, and given the reviews, I knew this would be a watch I could trust. The issue was, there are about 50 models of this thing between standard and limited edition models, and it is hard to know which is which and why what seems to be the same exact thing is $200 more from another seller. I can tell you: These watches have become collectable, and some of the limited edition and Japan only models fetch a lot of money here in the USA. If you are not going to collect it or are not locked into one of the special colors, you can get the one you want much cheaper sticking with the regular USA only release.
I’m mostly an avid cyclist and camper, so I wanted features that would be beneficial to me, and I tend to shoot and hunt a lot, so naturally I wound up settling on the Rangeman Master of G series. The only question became, black with positive display or green with negative. I read scores of reviews, watched every video. I was concerned with the reviews that slammed the readibility of the watch, but then I read a few where the reviewer said he could not be happier that he went with the negative display. So that sold me.
The price I paid, to me, was very fair. This watch is worth all of the $200 you will pay for it in my estimation.
Pros:
– Very, very comfortable to wear. Unlike my last watch that always rattled around on my wrist, this one stays put and I forget I have it on. This to me is one of my favorite things about the watch, I forget I am wearing it so I am never thinking “my watch is bugging me, I need to take it off for a bit.”
– Cool looking. Yeah, I know, but that is one of the things people look for when they are watch shopping. Does it make them happy to look at?
– Functionality: Excellent so far. I have not gotten deep into the calibrating of the altimeter or anything like that, but the buttons are easy to push, the automatic time reception is so strong that most nights it picks it up while I am asleep with it on my wrist, and I am nowhere near a window.
– Negative Display: Yes, at times it can be hard to read, and I might need to tilt my arm a little more than with a normal watch to get the right angle, but in the daytime, I find it very readable, and at night, I have gotten used to the arm movement you need to use to turn on the light automatically, so no problem there, either.
– Band: Love the dual fasteners, the metal band retainer looks good and works great, no sliding around for me and no annoying scratching as I type that makes me want to take off my watch like my previous one. I took that one off all the time at work, the GS? Never.
– Color: The green is just about right. whoever said it looks like a WWII tank nailed it. But in no way do I feel like it screams “I am a mall ninja” or “I am a seal team 6 wanna-be!” I don’t feel like a poser wearing military gear.
Cons:
– I wish I could make the light stay on longer, it would make it easier when cycling functions or trying to read the seconds display at night
In summary, I am VERY glad I got the one with the negative display, and this is from a guy who needs (but does not own) glasses. I think the negative display is really neat. I think there is a Japan only one that is black with the negative display if the green does not do it for you.

Excellent watch !
Very robust and good looking …
I’m near Quebec city so I’m in the limit of the signal of the atomic clock in Montana that synchronize my watch every day to the exact second …it work perfectly but I have to put on a Windows oriented south and at this emplacement it update automatically at approx midnight to 1 h am every day…I like this function very much I’m always at the precise hours and minutes and second …no more ajustements every month to adjust the time precisely
The others function works great like the sun time of sunset and sunrise …you have only to put your precise latitude and longitude an it’s very precise ( to know what’s the latitude and longitude of your town just type the name of your town with the word latitude and longitude in Google, and you will know what the number are ) …you can even go seeing a certain date to see at what hours will be the sunset or sunrise …
The negative display is not difficult at all to see in all light conditions if you have a normal good eyes…you have to understand that it’s not as bright as a normal display …set the watch light to auto function and it will bright the display in the light condition if needed when you turn your wrist to see the watch display …
The altimeter barometer are useful but not super precise …forget the thermometer it’s useless unless you put the watch somewhere and wait long minutes until the temperature stabilize …it’s influence by your body temperature
If you are a cleaning freak do not buy this watch because the negative display let you see any particules of dust on the watch glass ..you will clean it constantly…
It’s the best watch I ever own and the more expensive too
Buy it you will not regret it

I’ve known I would purchase this watch for about a year now but could not make up my mind which color I wanted and I especially dragged my feet on deciding between the positive or the negative display because of the comments regarding that feature here on Amazon. I ended up going with the green watch with the negative display despite a fair amount of reviews stating that it was tough to see.
After receiving the watch I can say that I’m very happy I went the negative display route. It looks great and is very easy to see in most light conditions. When lighting does make it difficult to read you can tap the light button (the big black button with the waffle-like grid below the 6 o’clock position) and it makes everything really easy to read as it lights it up for about a second. The light created by pushing that button is extremely soft and makes all of the data easy to read with a quick glance. The light is soft enough that you could use it in a movie theatre to check the time without bothering anyone.
All of the reviews on here were very helpful but I thought that I would weigh in on the negative display in case there are anymore people on the fence like me. If the negative display appeals to you then go for it. The display is easy to read most of the time and when it is not easy to read because of a glare then the light button will take care of that. I hope this helps.
Great watch; attractive, tactical, stylish, comfortable and rugged. If you are using this in the field then go ahead and get your first scratch on one of the polished band buckles and get it out of the way. This is a watch that is meant to be used. Once you have a scratch, get over it and then enjoy.
Also worth noting that as I have looked at these watches over the last twelve months or so I can tell you that the price fluctuates significantly. I have seen it as high as a little over three hundred and as low as under two hundred. Keep an eye out and create some value for yourself.
